The coal mine on Hashima, better known as Battleship Island, in Nagasaki Prefecture is one of the sites most coveted by ruins fanatics, who revel in exploring abandoned buildings and facilities from bygone days, including hotels, hospitals, schools and factories. The giant cantilever crane at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd.'s Nagasaki shipyard is still in working condition 106 years after it was completed.
