US stocks open mostly higher; Europe, Asia indexes lower

United Natural Foods slumped 5 percent early Tuesday after the food distributor reported disappointing results and lowered its full-year forecast. The Dow Jones industrial average edged up 31 points, or 0.2 percent, to 17,797 as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time.
