Chicago-based United Airlines could face a fine of more than $300,000 for allegedly operating a jet without a washer on the axle of a landing gear wheel. Boeing, the maker of the aircraft in question, and United maintenance manuals warn that the wheel bearing can fail if the washer is not installed.
