Wi-Fi use outside the home rises sharply - Telecompaper

2015-04-29 10:28:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Fewer Dutch people are making use of only home Wi-Fi access, a consequence of Wi-Fi becoming more available outside thanks to KPN and Ziggo hotspots and Wi-Fi network expansions, according to the latest Consumer Panel report by Telecompaper. The report revealed that the percentage of Dutch people accessing Wi-Fi only at home fell to 23 percent in 2015 from 53 percent in 2011. With the growing penetration of smartphones and tablets (61% of Dutch households owned at least one tablet in late 2014), it is becoming easier to acess Wi-Fi outside the home, with friends, in restaurants or at libraries. Especially the use of free Wi-Fi hotspots soared in the last few years, both for password-protected public WiFi hotspots and Wi-Fi access via own-provider hotspots. Operators like KPN and Ziggo, which merged with UPC in April, have built up an extensive Wi-Fi network open to private customers.
