I pay little attention to analysts' stock ratings because their recommendations are almost always to buy or hold a particular stock. Analysts had 11,539 stock ratings on companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 index at the end of the fourth quarter of 2015, and of those, 50.4 percent were buy ratings and 44.4 percent were holds - almost 95 percent of the total, according to FactSet Research Systems.
