Wind withdraws from 700 MHz auction
2014-01-14 15:34:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Wind Mobile has withdrawn from Canada's auction of frequencies in the 700 MHz band, after the company's controlling shareholder Vimpelcom decided against funding a bid for spectrum, Wind CEO Anthony Lacavera told Bloomberg. The spectrum auction was designed to provide a boost to the country's smaller operators, who first won frequencies in the last major auction in 2008. The three largest players, Bell Canada, Telus and Rogers, are each limited to one block of airwaves each. With the departure of Wind, there is a risk there will be no bidders for the fourth block of frequencies in some regional markets. The auction started on 14 January.
