Starting up a software company is inexpensive today, largely due to the fact that Web-services companies such as Amazon have removed expensive barriers, like the need to buy and configure servers. But starting up a life-sciences company remains cash-intensive, because there is little in the way of an early-stage ecosystem that can do for biotechnology what Amazon has done for Web companies.
