Contract signings to purchase previously owned homes rose less than forecast in October after declining in the prior two months, showing residential real estate is cooling heading into the quieter selling season. An index of pending home sales increased 0.2% in October after a revised 1.6% decline a month earlier, the National Association of Realtors said Monday.

" Slightly more Americans signed contracts to buy homes in October, in a modest rebound that suggests the real estate market has crested. The National Association of Realtors says its seasonally adjusted pending home sales index rose 0.2 percent to 107.7 last month.

According to the Massachusetts Association of Realtors, prospective buyers and sellers reached agreement on 5,782 single-family homes last month, up 32.2 percent from the October 2014 total of 4,375. The higher demand has kept pricing firm, as the median price for homes under agreement last month was $335,000, up 3.1 percent from the year-ago median of $325,000.

Pending home sales still booming In Mass.

This home in Pepperell came under agreement earlier this year. The Massachusetts Association of Realtors reported last week that more than 5,700 single-family homes came under agreement in the state last month, a 35 percent jump from the same month a year ago.
