Texas company fined $60K for taking water from river in Mississippi

A Texas oil company involved in the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale project has agreed to pay a $60,000 penalty for withdrawing water from a stream without a permit. The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality tells The Enterprise-Journal Halcon Operating Co., based in Houston, agreed to pay the sum for taking water from Buffalo River in Wilkinson County before getting DEQ permission.

River coalition calls for better conservation after TCEQ action

TCEQ officially approved the emergency order as requested by LCRA to stop releases of interruptible water from the Highland Lakes to irrigation operations in Colorado, Wharton and Matagorda counties. It comes as no surprise to Texas rice growers that the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality voted to cut off Colorado River irrigation water to agriculture and the environment for the fourth straight year during a meeting Wednesday That action rubber-stamps an emergency water request from the Lower Colorado River Authority , the group charged with managing water resources along the 862 mile waterway.

Officials in the Thumb area village of Sebewaing are using explosive charges to break up river ice and prevent flooding. The efforts on the Sebewaing River are being conducted in conjunction with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and others.

Indian Country: Gogebic Taconite announced last week that it is closing its office in Hurley, Wisconsin and, for now, putting plans on hold to build a huge open pit iron ore mine in the pristine Penokee Mountains in Northern Wisconsin.
