Duke Energy recently said it has reached a proposed agreement with the U.S. government that, if approved, would close a federal investigation of its subsidiaries, Duke Energy Carolinas, Duke Energy Progress and Duke Energy Business Services, related to the Dan River coal ash spill and ash basin operations at other North Carolina coal plants.

Shell Canada Ltd. says it's pulling its regulatory application for the proposed Pierre River oilsands project north of Fort McMurray, Alta., in order to focus on existing operations. The move is the latest blow to the oilsands as companies look to cut costs and capital spending plans following the drop in oil prices.

DEQ Proposes 361K Penalty Against CSX For James River Tanker Fire

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has proposed a consent order in response to the derailment of a rail car that caught fire in the James River in Lynchburg in April of last year. The order imposes a $361,000 civil charge against tanker car owner CSX Transportation Inc. An investigation by DEQ and CSX determined that of the more than 29,000 gallons of crude oil in the breached tanker, approximately 98 percent was consumed in the fire.
