In grasslands, longer spring growing season offsets higher summer temperatures
2016-03-01 03:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ScienceDaily: Grasslands across North America will face higher summer temperatures and widespread drought by the end of the century, according to a new study. But those negative effects in vegetation growth will be largely offset, the research predicts, by an earlier start to the spring growing season and warmer winter temperatures. Led by ecologists Andrew Richardson and Koen Hufkens of Harvard University, a team of researchers developed a detailed model that enables predictions of how grasslands from Canada...

How this farm extends growing season to offer year-round vegetables
2016-01-12 12:06:50| Agriculture - Topix.net
As a freezing wind blew across the field at Green Wagon Farm, Heather Anderson brushed away the frozen dirt and lifted the thick plastic over a tunneled garden cover last week to reveal a healthy green crop of kale. Green Wagon Farm, which has operated as a community-supported agriculture farm since 2010, is extending its growing season and offering produce to its subscribers on a 50-week basis instead of the 22-week subscription it has traditionally offered.

USDA Weather update: Late-week cold ends growing season
2014-10-10 22:16:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
A late-week cold snap ended the growing season, roughly on schedule, across much of the Upper Midwest. Although the freeze was not unusually early, some crops were developmentally delayed due to late planting and a relatively cool summer. As a result, producers in freeze-affected areas monitored immature corn and soybeans for signs of injury. read more

Longer growing season does not yield growth increase for trees and shrubs
2014-05-23 15:30:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Environmental News Network: As the earth's temperatures rise, some have speculated that trees and shrubs in the colder climates might experience and increase in growth as a result of the extended growing season. "Not so," says a recent study authored by a University of Washington biology and applied mathematics postdoctoral student. Her study demonstrates that bushes achieve less yearly growth when cold winter temperatures are interrupted by warm spurts that trigger growth. "When winter temperatures fluctuate between being...
