Changing Climate In Argentina Is Killing Penguin Chicks

National Public Radio: There's a patch of seashore along the coast of Argentina where hundreds of thousands of penguins make their home. It's called Punta Tombo. Dee Boersma, a conservation biologist at the University of Washington, has been going there for 30 years, and she's discovered that a changing climate is killing those penguins. I visited Boersma in 2003 for NPR's Radio Expeditions program. She literally lived amid the colony, the world's largest group of Magellanic penguins. Even then, she was worried. Penguin...

Climate Change Threatens Vulnerable Penguin Chicks

RedOrbit: Lacking their parents` waterproof feathers, penguin chicks covered in down can suffer and die from hypothermia after being exposed to drenching rain despite efforts of their concerned parents to keep them safe. While previous studies have found that singular events, like a rare Antarctic rainstorm, can threaten penguin chicks, a new study in the journal PLOS ONE has identified the additional risk long-term climate change trends have for the survival of these tiny birds. "It`s the first long-term...

Climate change is 'killing penguin chicks' say researchers
2014-01-29 07:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
BBC: Penguin chicks in Argentina are dying as a direct consequence of climate change, according to new research. Drenching rainstorms and extreme heat are killing the young birds in significant numbers. The study, conducted over 27 years, looked at climate impacts on the world's biggest colony of Magellanic penguins, which live on the arid Punta Tombo peninsula. The research has been published in the journal Plos One. About 200,000 pairs of these penguins make their nests on the peninsula...

Australian climate change researchers look to penguin poo

PBS NewsHour: If you're going to study the effects of climate change on a food chain, you have to look at how that food, ahem, ends up. Researchers from the Australian government's Antarctic Division will study the Antarctic food chain, specifically, the historical feeding habits of Adelie penguins and impacts of ocean acidification on phytoplankton and bacteria, the smallest building blocks of the southern continent's ecosystem, according to a report from AFP. Seabird expert Barbara Wienecke will lead the survey...
