The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality is proposing a record environmental fine of nearly $3.2 million against a company hired to treat water in Hugo. The Journal Record reports that a department investigation determined Severn Trent Services failed to meet minimum chlorine standards, putting potentially thousands of residents in the Hugo area at risk of drinking unsafe water for 317 days over two years.

As announced by U.S. EPA and U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Arch Coal Inc. and 14 of its subsidiaries under International Coal Group Inc. (ICG) agreed to conduct upgrades to their operations to ensure Clean Water Act compliance. This settlement resolves hundreds of Clean Water Act violations related to illegal discharges of pollutants at coal mines in KY, PA, MD, VA, and WV. Companies will also pay a $2 million civil penalty.
