XTO Energy to pay $5 million for fracking violations

ExxonMobil subsidiary XTO Energy, Inc. will pony up about $3 million to restore eight West Virginia sites where the company illegally filled wetlands and polluted the water during fracking operations. The company will also pay a civil penalty of $2.3 million for violating the Clean Water Act, with impacts along more than a mile of stream and 3.38 acres of wetlands.

China probes former carmaking executive for "disciplinary violations"

China's anti-corruption watchdog said on Thursday it was investigating Fan Zhong, a former senior executive at Dongfeng Motor Group Co, the local venture partner of Peugeot SA and Nissan Motor Co, for alleged "serious disciplinary violations". Fan, a former deputy secretary of the Communist Party committee at the company, is the latest target of Beijing's corruption investigation into state-owned Dongfeng, which also owns a carmaking venture with Honda Motor Co Ltd. The investigation is part of China's intensifying anti-corruption drive led by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection , with President Xi Jinping vowing to clean up the government and the corporate sector.

Albany County mobile home where 5-year-old boy was killed shuttered for serious code violations

Authorities have shuttered the upstate New York mobile home where police say a 5-year-old boy was bludgeoned and strangled by his teenage cousin. Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple tells local media that the home where Kenneth White was killed last Thursday had several code violations, including a floor that was in danger of collapsing.
