News from Uber Group More than 20 representatives from independent New Zealand wireless broadband providers have met in Wellington and resolved to form an industry group to jointly address issues facing their industry and speak to central government with one voice. The meeting in Wellington was initially set up to hear presentations from RSM, InternetNZ and TUANZ, and work towards a combined submission to the current review of the Radiocommunications Act, but it soon became obvious that most providers faced similar issues and there was much common ground.

For the second time this year, federal regulators are targeting a major wireless network over allegations that it added bogus third-party charges to consumers' cellular bills. Wireless carriers like to say that monthly data caps are necessary to prevent heavy users from slowing down less active ones. After surveying the four biggest carriers this year, the US Government Accountability Office reported that "some wireless ISPs told us they use UBP [usage-based pricing, i.e. data caps] to manage congestion."
