Novartis AG said Tuesday that third-quarter profit fell 42% from the same period last year, as the Swiss drug giant agreed to settle claims that it used rebates to get specialty pharmacies to increase prescriptions. Basel-based Novartis said net income fell to $1.81 billion, or $0.75 per share in the quarter ended in September, compared with $3.1 billion, or $1.27 share a year earlier.

Swiss pharmaceutical giant Novartis says net income fell 42 per cent in the third quarter, largely due to the sale of its hepatitis drug unit a year earlier and provisions for legal settlements and fees. The company says the integration of businesses from a multibillion-dollar product exchange with rival GlaxoSmithKline earlier this year is on track.

ZURICH: Novartis AG launched a portfolio of 15 medicines to treat chronic diseases in low- and low-middle-income countries, the drugmaker said in a statement on Thursday. The Basel-based company said 'Novartis Access' will be launched first in Kenya, Ethiopia and Vietnam, with expansion to eventually include 30 countries.

Novartis launches first US 'biosimilar' drug at 15 percent discount

Novartis kicked off a new era in U.S. medicine on Thursday with the launch of the first "biosimilar" copy of a biotechnology drug approved in the United States, at a discount of 15 percent to the original. The Swiss drugmaker's generics unit Sandoz said Zarxio, its form of Amgen's white blood cell-boosting product Neupogen, would increase access to an important treatment by offering a "high-quality, more affordable version".

Amgen today announced a neuroscience collaboration with Novartis in the areas of Alzheimer's disease and migraine. The collaboration accelerates Amgen's potential entry into Alzheimer's disease by teaming up with Novartis on a differentiated and genetically validated Alzheimer's disease program directed at genetically predisposed individuals at risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
