New Proposal to Protect Alaskan Wilderness Most Sweeping in Decades

2015-01-25 15:39:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

National Geographic: No president in 35 years has made as sweeping a conservation proposal as President Barack Obama did today by urging Congress to transform the oil-laden coastal plain of Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge into what would be the largest wilderness area in the nation's history. The president's move to designate 12.3 million acres of new wilderness would block decades of efforts to drill for oil on a 1.5-million-acre portion of the refuge. That coastal region is thought to contain up to 10.3-billion...

"If future generations are to remember us with gratitude rather than contempt," President Johnson said later, "we must leave them something more than the miracles of technology. 09.27: First Wilderness: My Quest in the Territory of Alaska

2014-08-18 22:38:51| Powells Books Events Calendar

First published in 1973, Sam Keith's One Man's Wilderness: An Alaskan Odyssey was based on the journals and photography of his dear friend, Dick Proenneke. In 2003, portions of the book were used in Alone in the Wilderness, a documentary which aired on public television stations. In 2013, Keith's daughter, Laurel Lies, discovered amidst her father's possessions a manuscript, originally written in 1974. First Wilderness (Alaska Northwest Books) includes Keith's journals, letters, and notebooks, woven into the manuscript to create a compelling, poignant memoir that offers descriptions of pre-statehood Alaska and its wildlife. Lies will be joined in conversation by editor Tricia Brown.
