Halliburton cuts more jobs as fracking hit worst in oil downturn

2015-10-19 23:36:27| Oil & Gas - Topix.net

Halliburton cut another 2,000 jobs in the past month as the worst oil market slump in decades saps demand for work at the world's largest provider of fracking services. The Houston-based company said the first quarter of next year may represent the lowest point for its North American profit margin as customers start fresh with new spending budgets for 2016 and tap Halliburton's pressure-pumping expertise to start new wells.

UK public conflicted about Shale Gas fracking shows opinion survey

Blue and Green: A new study reveals that the public have considerable reservations about hydraulic fracture stimulation or fracking in shale gas. This is consistent with research over the last few decades that consistently shows that the British public prefers renewable energy sources over alternatives, and that they consider fossil fuels to be polluting, finite, and outdated. Lead author Professor Lorraine Whitmarsh from Cardiff University and the Tyndall Centre says This is the first UK experimental survey...

Oil and Water Dont Mix: California Must Ban Fracking

2015-10-14 14:31:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

EcoWatch: Millions of years ago, shallow oceans covered big swaths of North America. The bottoms of these ancient seas became cemeteries for sea lilies, squid and diatoms. In this oxygen-poor environment, these creatures turned into drops of oil or bubbles of methane. Time and pressure turned the silty layers of the seafloor into stony layers of shale, trapping the oily, gassy corpses within. These fossilized graveyards are now the bedrock that underlies much of our nation, including upstate New York, where...

Examiner: Expectant mothers living near fracking sites have a higher risk of premature births. This is the conclusion of a new study published Sept. 30 in the journal Epidemiology. What they found was that mothers who lived in the vicinity of drilling and fracking sites were 40 percent more likely to give birth to premature babies. They were also 30 percent more likely to have high-risk pregnancies. Scientists at Johns Hopkins University, Brown University and the University of California, Berkeley and...

EcoWatch: Yesterday, indigenous leaders and activists against fracking interrupted the auction of oil and gas exploration blocks organized by the Brazilian Agency of Oil and Gas to talk about climate change, indigenous rights, divestment and climate justice. Their intervention was followed by unionized oil workers who also spoke against the auction, which was described as a failure by local media, as only 37 out of the 266 blocks being auctioned were sold. Later in the day, a press conference was organized...
