Reflecting sunlight into space has terrifying consequences, say scientists
2014-11-26 10:23:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: Fighting global warming by reflecting sunlight back into space risks terrifying consequences including droughts and conflicts, according to three major new analyses of the promise and perils of geoengineering. But research into deliberately interfering with the climate system must continue in search of technology to use as a last resort in combating climate change, scientists have concluded. Billions of people would suffer worse floods and droughts if technology was used to block warming sunlight,...

Our terrifying reliance on GPS, and the need to develop a ground-based alternative
2014-11-07 20:16:24| Extremetech
The Global Positioning System, or GPS, has -- somewhat surprisingly -- found itself at the heart of modern civilization. There is no doubt that the ubiquity of GPS across all areas of civilian, commercial, and scientific endeavor has improved the quality of life for billions of people. It is a little bit scary, then, that GPS can very easily be jammed or disrupted by terrorists or other nefarious actors. What are the alternatives? Do we have a backup?

5 Terrifying Facts Leaked UN Climate Report
2014-08-29 17:50:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Climate Desk: Even if we slash greenhouse gases immediately, the dangerous effects of global warming will continue for centuries to come. How many synonyms for "grim" can I pack into one article? I had to consult the thesaurus: ghastly, horrid, awful, shocking, grisly, gruesome. This week, a big report from the UN`s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was leaked before publication, and it confirmed, yet again, the grim--dire, frightful--reality the we face if we don`t slash our global greenhouse gas...

Hyundais 2015 Genesis will automatically brake for speed cameras: Awesome, or a terrifying misuse of technology?
2014-06-26 19:31:28| Extremetech
Rejoice, speeding drivers! The new 2015 Hyundai Genesis, which goes on sale around the world this year, will soon have the ability to automatically brake for speed cameras. The car will have a built-in map of speed cameras and average speed cameras, and then use a combination of GPS and its fancy Automatic Emergency Braking technology to brake if you're still going over the speed limit when you reach the camera. While this feature is probably legal, it does appear to go against the spirit of speed cameras; after all, if you can just keep your foot down, and rely on the car to automatically brake for speed cameras, that's hardly very safe, right?

Floods affect over 1 million in Balkans, destruction 'terrifying.'
2014-05-20 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: Bosnia said on Monday that more than a quarter of its 4 million people had been affected by the worst floods to hit the Balkans in living memory, comparing the "terrifying" destruction to that of the country's 1992-95 war. The extent of the devastation became apparent in Serbia too, as waters receded in some of the worst-hit areas to reveal homes toppled or submerged in mud, trees felled and villages strewn with the rotting corpses of livestock. The regional death toll reached more than 40,...
