02.16: Carmen Boullosa
2015-01-16 00:05:23| Powells Books Events Calendar
Described by Roberto Bolaño (2666, The Savage Detectives) as "Mexico's greatest woman writer," Carmen Boullosa is an imaginative author in the tradition of Jorge Luis Borges and César Aira. With her latest novel, Texas: The Great Theft (Deep Vellum), Boullosa shows herself to be at the height of her powers. Loosely based on the little-known 1859 Mexican invasion of the United States, Texas is a richly imagined evocation of the volatile Tex-Mex borderland. Boullosa views border history through distinctly Mexican eyes, and her sympathetic portrayal of each of her wildly diverse characters makes her storytelling tremendously powerful and absorbing. Shedding important historical light on current battles over the Mexican-American frontier while telling a gripping story with singular prose and formal innovation, Texas marks the welcome return of a major writer who has previously captivated American audiences and is poised to do so again. This event is sponsored by the Latino Network.
02.16: Sarah Gerard

The language of the stars is the language of the body. Like a star, the anorexic burns fuel that isn't replenished; she is held together by her own gravity. With luminous, lyrical prose, Sarah Gerard's Binary Star (Two Dollar Radio) is an impassioned account of a young woman struggling with anorexia and her long-distance, alcoholic boyfriend. On a road trip across the United States, they stumble onto a veganarchism book and believe they've found a direction. Binary Star is an intense, fast-moving saga of two young lovers and the culture that keeps them sick (or at least inundated with quick-fix solutions); a society that sells diet pills, sleeping pills, magazines that profile celebrities who lose weight or too much weight or put on weight, and books that pimp diet secrets or recipes for success.
02.16: Peter Mountford

The Dismal Science (Tin House) tells of a middle-aged vice president at the World Bank, Vincenzo D'Orsi, who publicly quits his job over a seemingly minor argument with a colleague. A scandal inevitably ensues, and he systematically burns every bridge to his former life. After abandoning his career, Vincenzo, a recent widower, is at a complete loss as to what to do with himself. The story follows his efforts to rebuild his identity without a vocation or the company of his wife. An exploration of the fragile nature of identity, Peter Mountford's novel reveals the terrifying speed with which a person's sense of self can be annihilated.

02.16: Drawing and Painting Imaginary Animals

Carla Sonheim is an illustrator and creativity workshop instructor who's beloved for her innovative projects and techniques designed to help anyone discover a more spontaneous, playful approach to creating. Her goal is to get participants simply to play, for as little as 10 minutes a day, with pen and paper, thoughts and images. It's amazing to discover how a shot of silliness — creating like a kid does for just 10 minutes — can positively inspire your outlook, your "real work," and more. Along with her books, The Art of Silliness (Perigee) and Drawing and Painting Imaginary Animals (Quarry), Sonheim will present drawing exercises and demonstrations (supplies will be available at the event).
