The world's second-largest mobile operator abandoned talks with John Malone's Liberty last week over valuation disagreements that would have seen a swap of assets or a broader merger that could have helped Vodafone, in one fell swoop, offer mobile, broadband and TV in its biggest markets. Instead the focus now returns to the unglamorous effort to get revenues and profit growing steadily again, especially in Germany and Spain where Vodafone spent 15 billion euros buying cable players Kabel Deutschland and Ono to compete with local leaders Deutsche Telekom on upgrading its networks globally.
EC raises concerns about Liberty acquisition of Base

(Telecompaper) The European Commission has opened an investigation into the proposed acquisition of Base by Liberty Global, looking to see if it will harm competition. Based on its initial investigation, the Commission has concerns the transaction could lead to higher prices, less choice and less innovative services for customers in the Belgian telecommunications market. The Commission now has 90 working days, until 18 February, to take a decision.

Vodafone Group Plc has seen its shares stumble after announcing that asset swap talks with Liberty Global have ended without any deal being made. The British-based cellphone company said Monday the negotiations have been terminated but did not offer any explanation for the cutoff.
