Liberty Global, Discovery buy stakes in Lionsgate
2015-11-10 16:48:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Cable group Liberty Global is continuing its expansion in the content market with the acquisition of a stake in film and TV studio Lionsgate. Liberty Global and Discovery Communications each have agreed to buy 5.0 million common shares of Lionsgate from MHR Fund Management, resulting in each having a 3.4 percent stake in the company. The purchase price is USD 195 million each for Liberty and Discovery. The investment in Lionsgate gets Liberty Global and Discovery a "preferred partner relationship" for licensing rights to certain content across their markets. Productions of Lionsgate include the series Orange is the New Black, Mad Men and Nashville, as well as the Hunger Games film, the first two installments of the Divergent franchise, Sicario and The Age of Adaline. Liberty Global and Discovery will each get a seat on Lionsgate's board. This will be CEO Mike Fries for Liberty Global and CEO David Zaslav for Discovery Communications. John Malone, Liberty's chairman and a member of Discovery's board, already sits on the Lionsgate board. Emily Fine, a designee of MHR Fund Management, will also join the board, while Lionsgate founder Frank Giustra will step down from the board.

Liberty Global improves customer numbers in Q3
2015-11-06 08:23:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Liberty Global reported improving customer numbers in the third quarter, with the net addition of 320,000 new subscribers. Growth was led by Germany (102,000) and the UK (68,000), while Ziggo in the Netherlands (-18,000) still struggled to turn around its performance since the merger with UPC. Liberty Global said it's still aiming to add over 1 million new subscribers in the full year, after 526,000 in the first nine months of the year. In Europe, the cable operator added 300,000 subscribers in Q3 to finish September with a total 53.2 million revenue-generating units, at 48.8 million homes passed in Europe. The company averaged 2.06 services per customer, and 45 percent of customers were on a triple-play plan. Liberty Global also added 339,000 new subscribers for its Horizon and Tivo platforms in the quarter, for a total of over 4 million. Revenue in Europe rose just 2 percent to USD 4.3 billion, hurt by the stronger dollar; excluding forex and acquisition effects, organic revenue rose 3.5 percent year-on-year, helped by expansion in broadband, business services and the mobile market. Operating cash flow in Europe rose 4 percent to USD 2.1 billion, and capital expenditure increased to USD 981 million, or 22.9 percent of revenue, from USD 845 million a year ago.

Liberty Global launches new Wi-Fi gateway
2015-11-05 10:39:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Liberty Global confirmed the launch of its next-generation Wi-Fi and telephony gateway across its European operations. The data modem and a Wi-Fi router will support broadband speeds up to 1 Gbps over its EuroDocsis 3.0 network. The new gateway is now available to Telenet customers in Belgium and UPC customers in Romania and will be introduced across the rest of Europe in the coming months. The cable operator said this is the first time it has designed a universal, locally-branded broadband product to be rolled out across its European and Latin American markets. The device was developed with the manufacturers Arris and Compal and is powered by software from Celeno, which supports the highest possible speeds over Wi-Fi to multiple devices. The box features a simplified LED display and an installation wizard to help customers set up and customise their home Wi-Fi service quickly and easily, according to the operator. Liberty Global said it's also focusing on extending the Wi-Fi service outside the home. It aims to grow its hotspot footprint from around 6 million public sites in Europe currently to over 10 million in 2016.

Liberty Global confirms Cable & Wireless takeover talks
2015-10-23 08:41:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Liberty Global has confirmed that it has entered into discussions regarding a possible cash-and-shares offer to take over UK-based telecoms group Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC). The two companies have been in talks for some time about bringing together CWC's strong position in the Caribbean with Liberty's operations in Chile and Puerto Rico, according to unnamed sources cited by the Financial Times, who added that negotiations have centred around a price of USD 5.5 billion, with Liberty also assuming CWC's net debt of around USD 2.6 billion. According to UK law, Liberty now has until 19 November to submit an offer. The possible deal comes after Liberty Global announced that it had ended discussions with Vodafone about an exchange or combination of assets, although it did agree to acquire Belgium's third-largest operator Base for EUR 1.33 billion earlier this year.
