IBM has reached into its software portfolio to provide a more sophisticated scheduler for the OpenStack deployments it builds for its customers. "You don't want a cloud user to feel like their application is not performing as advertised," said Jay Muelhoefer, IBM's strategy director for the new Platform Resource Scheduler.

Salesforce.com, the preeminent SaaS (software as a service) company, is reportedly joining the open source OpenStack project. The Wall Street Journal quotes Graham Weston, co-founder and chairman of Rackspace, which is one of the original OpenStack companies, to report the news. The move would be a major endorsement of the open source platform by yet another major technology company. Salesforce.com would join the ranks of Cisco, IBM, Intel, Red Hat, Dell, HP and dozens of others who have thrown support behind the open source infrastructure as a service (IaaS) project.

Dell and Red Hat team to sell enterprise OpenStack

Dell will start selling systems early next year that run Red Hat's version of the OpenStack open-source cloud platform. The offering will be tailored for large enterprises that wish to set up private clouds, said Radhesh Balakrishnan, Red Hat general manager for virtualization and OpenStack.
Oracle becomes sponsor of OpenStack Foundation

Oracle is now a corporate sponsor of the OpenStack Foundation and plans to weave parts of the open-source infrastructure platform into its own products, saying it will give customers more flexibility and options for managing clouds. The products in question include the Solaris OS, Oracle's Linux distribution, Oracle VM, Oracle Virtual Compute Appliance, Oracle's IaaS (infrastructure as a service) offering, and ZS3 Series, Axiom and StorageTek systems, according to Tuesday's announcement.
