Federal program to fuel wireless Internet at 22 ABSS sites
2015-04-15 05:47:10| Wireless - Topix.net
The Alamance-Burlington School System will put new, powerful wireless Internet infrastructure in 22 schools as soon as funding comes through. The $1.7 million project should cost ABSS nothing, said Angela Bost, ABSS assistant superintendent, since 80 percent will come directly from E-Rate, a federal program funded with telecom taxes paying for Internet connections for schools and libraries, and the other 20 percent from the federal Race to the Top funds the state has set aside for ABSS.

USTelecom starts legal challenge of FCC Open Internet rules
2015-04-14 08:46:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Industry association USTelecom filed a lawsuit against the FCC's Open Internet rules. Following publication of the net neutrality rules in the Federal Registry, opponents can appeal the regulations in court. USTelecom, which is challenging the rules in the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, said the Open Internet regulation is "arbitrary and capricious, and violates federal law". While the industry supports net neutrality standards, it believes the FCC took the wrong approach in regulating the matter, by relying on Title II of the Telecommunications Act, USTelecom said in a statement. "Reclassifying broadband Internet access as a public utility reverses decades of established legal precedent at the FCC and upheld by the Supreme Court," USTelecom said. "History has shown that common carrier regulation slows innovation, chills investment, and leads to increased costs on consumers."

A telecom industry group Monday challenged "open Internet" regulations barring US broadband providers from separating online traffic into slow and fast lanes, hours after official publication of the order. The US Federal Communications Commission published its "net neutrality" order in the federal register earlier Monday, making the hotly contested rules effective June 12. USTelecom, a trade group that includes major broadband providers such as AT&T and Verizon, announced it had filed a lawsuit in federal court seeking to block implementation of the plan.
