AT&T launches its GigaPower Internet service in Houston

AT&T today flipped the switch on the first consumer gigabit Internet service in the Houston area, bringing its GigaPower network to three communities with promises to expand it further this year. Bellaire, Pasadena and northwest Harris County customers will be first to get GigaPower, which can provide download speeds of up to 1,000 megabits a second.

Microsoft recently followed up to that announcement The DragonBoard 410c is roughly the same size as a Raspberry Pi 2, but it has a faster 64-bit CPU, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS connections -- four features which the 32-bit Pi 2 lacks. The DragonBoard 410c costs $75, but its beefier specs could make it a better all-in-one solution for creating Internet of Things devices.

As I've reported before , Seattle desperately needs affordable, reliable high-speed Internet service, and a lot of people are pissed off that the city's two dominant providers - Comcast and CenturyLink - haven't yet made it available in all parts of town. President Obama says he stands behind any city that wants to take matters into its own hands, over those companies' objections , by creating municipal utility-run gigabit broadband networks.
