Midwest crops update: Predicted yields variable; keep scouting for diseases, pests
2016-08-19 20:24:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
Agronomists for WinField have been out in corn and soybean fields and working with farmers this growing season. Early yield predictions are highly variable, ranging from lower than normal to higher than normal across the Midwest. Politics, economics and nature collide to spread Zika and other diseases
2016-08-07 04:14:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Washington Post: With the Zika virus looming just a couple of years after Ebola spread across West Africa, what's long been obvious to experts should now be clear to the rest of us: We live in an era of emerging pathogens. Between 1940 and 2004, more than 300 infectious diseases either emerged or spread into new places and populations. On July 29, Florida Gov. Rick Scott called a news conference to alert the public to four cases of Zika in South Florida transmitted locally by mosquitoes. (The number grew last...

Understanding the links between climate change and arable crop diseases using modelling
2016-07-29 13:53:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Phys.Org: A recently published research paper co-authored by the University of Hertfordshire's Bruce Fitt, explores how modelling is being used to help guide planning of climate change adaption strategies to ensure future food security. The paper entitled Modelling impacts of climate change on arable crop diseases: progress, challenges and applications, has been published on Science Direct. It examines the work being done to combine climate change, crop growth and crop disease models. Jointly published...

Researchers Find Fungus a Possible Precursor of Severe Respiratory Diseases in Pigs
2016-07-21 02:00:00| ThePigSite - Industry News
AUSTRIA - Respiratory diseases in pigs typically involve multiple infections from different pathogens. Some pathogens play a greater role than others in the progression of the disease. The fungus Pneumocystis carinii is a relatively common cause of pneumonia in Austrian pigs, but its role has so far remained largely unexplored. Pneumocystis is considered to be less dangerous than other pathogens, as it probably requires other underlying conditions to sufficiently weaken the immune defence of the animals first.
