At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, we've seen the unveiling of Chevy's electric car, heard Ford say its going to go big on self-driving technology, and learned that General Motors bought a big stake in a ride sharing app. In other words, the auto industry is starting to sound a lot like those Silicon Valley upstarts that want to change the world.

The automotive presence at the CES gadget show in Las Vegas has grown so large that the show's organizers are bragging about supplanting Detroit. "You could say we've shifted the center of gravity from Detroit to Las Vegas this week," Gary Shapiro, CEO and president of the Consumer Technology Association, said Wednesday at the introduction of Chevrolet's new all-electric Bolt compact car.

Lawmakers urge MDEQ to reject Detroit oil refinery permit, compare risk to Flint water crisis

A group of Democratic state lawmakers are urging the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality not to approve a permit that would allow Marathon Oil to release more pollutants into the air at its southwest Detroit refinery. The changes Marathon is proposing would not violate state or federal air quality standards, the MDEQ found in a preliminary determination.
