California Snowpack Won't Recover From Drought For Years
2016-06-27 07:25:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Capital Public Radio: The winter of 2015 capped four years of drought that resulted in an unprecedented water deficit in Sierra Nevada snowpack. Much of Californias water comes from snowmelt. Researchers at UCLA say in a new study, that this winters strong El Nio didnt make up for that deficit. They found that even if the state gets above-average precipitation, it will take until 2019 to recover. Scientists used NASA satellite and snow survey data to assess snowpack. This gave them a better and more accurate picture...

The California drought aint over til its over (and its not over)
2016-06-22 22:35:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Grist: Bad news, Californians: Even though some state officials have declared the drought over, you`re in for three more years of below-average water levels, according to a new report from UCLA. The study found that despite El Nio pushing up precipitation across the state this winter, the effect of the drought that began in 2012 is so severe that the Sierra Nevada snowpack isn`t expected to recover until 2019. That`s assuming those mountains actually see snow in the next couple of years - a lot of it....

Corn Belt could have 'flash drought' this summer
2016-06-18 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Ag Web: There's a chance the Corn Belt could see a "flash drought' over the summer as temperatures across the U.S. may be higher than normal through the next three months, according to government forecasters. Above-normal temperatures may combine with a drop in rainfall across the region that extends from Nebraska and Kansas in the west to Ohio in the east, said Brad Pugh, a meteorologist with the U.S. Climate Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland. "For the seasonal drought outlook, we're not...
Californias drought isnt going away anytime soon
2016-06-15 23:14:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Grist: Several months after storms fueled by a fierce El Nio exploded over the northern Sierra Nevada, Californias mountain snowpack has nearly disappeared. Scientists bid adieu last week to an El Nio that had been among the strongest on record, but that brought disappointingly few wintertime snowflakes and raindrops to the Southwest. Snow that bucketed down in northern California during a string of March storms has largely withered during a sunny and warm spring.
