NASA finds good news on forests & carbon dioxide

2015-01-03 01:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

ScienceDaily: A new NASA-led study shows that tropical forests may be absorbing far more carbon dioxide than many scientists thought, in response to rising atmospheric levels of the greenhouse gas. The study estimates that tropical forests absorb 1.4 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide out of a total global absorption of 2.5 billion -- more than is absorbed by forests in Canada, Siberia and other northern regions, called boreal forests. "This is good news, because uptake in boreal forests is already slowing,...

NASA CO2 map reveals impact of forest clearance

2014-12-22 12:04:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

RTCC: Early data has come in from the first satellite dedicated to monitoring levels of carbon dioxide in the air -- with some surprising results. The patch of dense carbon dioxide above China was to be expected, as factories churn out emissions. But the biggest swathes of red -- signifying a high concentration of the greenhouse gas -- appeared over the southern hemisphere. "Preliminary analysis shows these signals are largely driven by the seasonal burning of savannas and forests," explained...

NASA Satellite Sends Back Most Detailed View of CO2

2014-12-18 22:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Climate Central: It's been a busy five months for NASA's newest carbon dioxide-monitoring satellite, snapping up to 1 million measurements a day of how carbon dioxide moves across the planet. Now NASA scientists have shared the first global maps created using that data, showing one of the most detailed views of CO2 ever created. The satellite -- known as OCO-2 -- has been in orbit since July. While it's returned some preliminary data, NASA showed off its global reach for the first time on Thursday at the annual...
