Newark Venture Fund Seeks $50M to Put New Jersey City on Startup Map

A new accelerator and early-stage venture fund, targeted at $50 million, are coming to Newark, N.J., a place so close to the startup hub of New York, yet, in many ways, so far. The goal of the supporters of Newark Venture Partners and its sister entity Newark Venture Accelerator, which will start accepting startups in October, is to create a substantial technology industry in the city.

Venture investment in U.S.-based health-care companies continued at a healthy pace in the first half of 2015, driven by biotechnology companies, Brian Gormley reports for Dow Jones VentureWire. Investors poured $3.89 billion into 195 funding rounds in the second quarter of this year, according to data from industry tracker Dow Jones VentureSource.

Late last year, Tempe, Arizona-based ClearData, which provides cloud computing security services for the health care industry, hired former Rackspace Hosting Inc. executive Scott White to lead its new office in San Antonio. ClearData is leasing space at Geekdom, the downtown co-location space for technology entrepreneurs, and now has 10 people in the Alamo City.

Start-up investment drops in Dallas and Texas

Venture capitalists invested less money in young companies in North Texas and statewide in the second quarter even as national funding reached a level not seen since the dot-com boom in 2000. Seven North Texas companies raised $37 million - the smallest quarterly amount in three years, according to the MoneyTree report by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association, with data from Thomson Reuters.
