Microsoft is updating a number of its IT infrastructure and development tools to work more seamlessly with its Azure hosted cloud services, including Windows Server, System Center, Visual Studio, and SQL Server. "You can think of all these products as being Azure-powered. We're bringing the experience, code and design from Azure to our on-premise products," said Brad Anderson, who is Microsoft's corporate vice president of Windows Server and System Center.

Salesforce.com plans to ship in the second half of the year a hosted application for companies to create intranets that are accessible via mobile devices and that offer ESN (enterprise social networking) capabilities to employees. Called Company Communities, the application uses Salesforce.com's Chatter ESN product and combines it with newly developed software to offer an alternative to legacy intranets with static pages and unappealing interfaces built only for desktop devices.

IBM preps SmartCloud for real-time analytics

Deploying an update of its DB2 database, IBM is pitching its SmartCloud IaaS (infrastructure as a service) for use in data reporting and analysis. "We're the only player in the marketplace that has [a cloud service] for data-in-motion -- being able to analyze data in real time," said Bob Picciano, IBM's general manager for Information Management.
