Ask The Expert: Management Recruiting Tips

2013-08-14 05:44:44| AutomotiveDigest.com - Automotive Industry News

Don Jasensky is the President of Automotive Personnel LLC and answers this months question. How can our dealership improve our management recruitment process? There are a few basic steps you need to take when initiating your recruiting and interviewing process. Here are a couple of highlights. 1) The Great Question : To cut through the clutter I have developed this question that I have used for 15+ years and it works masterfully. The Best Question To Ask Before Starting the Search Process: "A year from now, what will the new employee need to accomplish to be considered a great hire? I have seen numerous "hiring committees" actually break into argument over what the person needs to accomplish. This is good - I want to make sure the decision maker / hiring managers agree exactly what "success will look like" a year from now. To me, the answer to this question is like a ship's Captain looking at his orders and then plotting the course that will lead to success. Knowing what to look for is half the battle! 2) The Check List: There are two parts to the checklist: - establish what you are looking for - establish your knockout factors What You Are Looking For : If there is a group that will be part of the interviewing process, make sure all parties have the same checklist . Here is a working example I am using for a current Controller search: Recruitment Checklist: - Years of experience desired - Degree required - Industry or related industry knowledge - Geographic location - What level - "C" Level - VP - Department Manager - individual Contributor, etc. - Education / training beyond college - Accomplishments - Credentials / licensure - Other Knockout Factors - Non-compete - Relocation - Credit - Criminal - Drug Screen - Personality not a fit - Candidate not open to learning new system - Income requirements too high - Not a fit for your corporate culture - Career aspiration not in-line with company/position - Sense of urgency lacking Remember your 6th sense works best when it is considering all the facts!
