In September 2006, a pregnant woman named Peggy Young sent her bosses at United Parcel Service a doctor's note advising her not to lift anything heavier than 20 pounds for the first 20 weeks of her pregnancy, and then no more than 10 pounds until she gave birth. Her job description, however, required her to heft packages heavier than that, so Young was told she couldn't continue to work as a delivery driver while pregnant.

Orthodox Jews back Muslim head scarfs at Supreme Court

Seven national Orthodox Jewish groups filed a Supreme Court brief in favor of a Muslim woman's right to wear a head scarf at work. The brief was filed by attorney Nathan Lewin of Lewin & Lewin, LLP of Washington D.C. for a case that is expected to be heard in February or March of next year on whether an applicant's failure to give explicit notice that she is a practicing Muslim who wears a head scarf at work allowed clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch to reject her application, saying it was in violation of the company dress code.

On December 9, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the last of three state and local tax cases that it accepted this term Alabama Department of Revenue v. CSX Transportation, Inc. , a case that had previously been before the Supreme Court.
