Now that Texas Instruments Inc.'s restructuring is complete and annual revenue has started growing again, it plans to boost chip production on larger wafers to drive future growth, two executives said this morning in a webcast with semiconductor analysts.

Dallas-based Texas Instruments has donated $3.5 million to the University of Texas' Cockrell School of Engineering to create dedicated laboratory space at the department's under-construction Engineering Education and Research Center. That project, with a budget of more than $300 million, is set to open in 2017 and will feature the TI Laboratories as part of its 430,000 square feet of open and flexible learning space.

General Electric Co plans to cut 330 jobs in Texas in its oil and gas division, as it grapples with pressure on the unit from the drop in oil prices. The U.S. conglomerate notified Texas state regulators of the planned layoffs at its beam-pumping manufacturing facility in Lufkin, Texas, which amount to about 45 percent of the staff at the location.

The award, given under the transportation category, will be presented during the Engineering Excellence Awards Banquet at the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin on March 30, 2015.
