May 5 Crop Progress: Corn crop nearly 1/3 planted; soybean planting place slow

Science Recorder: Corn, the backbone of much of the American Midwest, may be more vulnerable to droughts than it was just two decades ago, according to a new study published in the journal Science. The study was conducted by David Lobell, an associate professor of environmental Earth science at Stanford University. Use growing degree days, not calendar days, when planting corn

Think of corn in thermal time (growing degree days) instead of calendar time, advises Emerson Nafziger, University of Illinois agronomist. If the whole (corn) crop got planted May 10 instead of May 1, we would not see a big drop in yield. We wont lose a huge amount of yield until mid-May. We may have forgotten theres a real advantage for the corn plant to be in a fairly warm soil, ready to germinate and emerge in five to six days." read more
