3 tips for more efficient nitrogen application to corn
2014-05-08 20:46:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
Source: DuPont Pioneer New research is showing nitrogen applications to corn are most beneficial when the plant needs it: before planting and during growing season by tassel. Studies from DuPont Pioneer and Iowa State University show that newer corn hybrids need nitrogen available later into the growing period. read more

U.S. corn yields increasingly vulnerable to hot, dry weather
2014-05-03 16:29:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Science Recorder: Corn, the backbone of much of the American Midwest, may be more vulnerable to droughts than it was just two decades ago, according to a new study published in the journal Science. The study was conducted by David Lobell, an associate professor of environmental Earth science at Stanford University. "The Corn Belt is phenomenally productive," said Lobell in a statement to PHYS.Org News, "but in the past two decades we saw very small yield gains in non-irrigated corn under the hottest conditions....

Use growing degree days, not calendar days, when planting corn
2014-05-02 18:02:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
Think of corn in thermal time (growing degree days) instead of calendar time, advises Emerson Nafziger, University of Illinois agronomist. If the whole (corn) crop got planted May 10 instead of May 1, we would not see a big drop in yield. We wont lose a huge amount of yield until mid-May. We may have forgotten theres a real advantage for the corn plant to be in a fairly warm soil, ready to germinate and emerge in five to six days." read more
