Corn, Soybean Prices Continue to Retrace 2012 Drought Rally
2013-05-21 02:00:00| ThePigSite - Industry News
US - Corn and soybean prices rallied sharply beginning in July 2012 as US drought conditions unfolded. It was generally expected that prices would follow the pattern experienced in other "short crop" years, with prices peaking near harvest and then returning to pre-drought levels later in the marketing year. That pattern has generally unfolded, with some differences between corn and soybeans and between old crop and new crop prices, writes Darrel Good.

New Crop Corn Improves Prospects for Pork Profits
2013-05-20 21:16:00| National Hog Farmer
By Steve Meyer, Paragon Economics, Inc., Adel, IA A dry week in the Midwest will likely be reflected in substantial, probably record-high, weekly planting progress report when those data are released this afternoon. That prospect has new crop corn futures trading near $5.15/bu. today and only four cents higher than the December contracts lifetime low of $5.11/bu. set June 15, 2012. That, of course, was about the time that last summers heat and lack of rainfall began to be a clear problem and prompting Dec 13 futures to go above $6.60/bu. by early September. Should good growing conditions prevail, $5/bu. corn will be high at harvest time. read more

Nitrogen Testing Tool Increases Corn Profits
2013-05-15 21:37:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
The latest fertility technology means that you can reassess your corn crops nitrogen needs every 24 hours, reducing nitrogen inputs and saving corn input expenses. You can now assess your corn’s nitrogen (N) needs every 24 hours. The Adapt-N online computer model, from Cornell University, simulates the complex processes in a corn field: local precipitation and temperatures, soil type, soil organic matter and slope, previous crops, inputs, tillage, planting date, population, hybrids, rotation, type and date of starter and yield potential. Using high-resolution weather information (3x3-mile grids), the web model tailors site-specific N recommendations to your farm in almost real time. read more
