Texas Economist: Record-Large Corn Crop Possible
2013-01-16 15:52:00| National Hog Farmer
Source: Reuters U.S. corn production, slashed dramatically by drought in 2012, could rebound to a record-large crop this year if yields improve moderately, said an agricultural economist from Texas A&M University on Monday in a report filed by Reuters. Economist David Anderson also said pork production could top beef in 2014, pushing beef into third place in U.S. meat production. Poultry and pork production are on the rise while beef is held back by high feed costs and drought-damaged grassland. read more

Fortified by Global Warming, Deadly Fungus Poisons Corn Crops, Causes Cancer
2013-01-15 18:20:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Scientific American: Last years drought increased the spread of a carcinogenic mold called aspergillus (Aspergillus flavus), a fungal pathogen that poisons cattle, kills pets and has infected the 2012 corn crop, rendering significant portions of the harvest unfit for consumption. Whereas the deadly organism mainly affects countries like China and developing African nations, many U.S. states have experienced an increase in corn contamination since 2011. 02.09: Beautiful Corn
2013-01-15 00:37:53| Powells Books Events Calendar
Cultivated from sea level to mountaintop, from parched deserts to sodden rain forests, from the rocky Gaspé Peninsula to the plains of Argentina, corn is the grain of the Americas. In terms of culinary uses, it is amazingly diverse, reflecting the breathtaking variety of the continents and environments from which it evolved. In Beautiful Corn (New Society), market farmer and naturalist Anthony Boutard weaves together this unique plant's contribution to our culture, its distinctive biology, and the practical information needed to grow and enjoy it at home. Beautiful Corn advocates a return to the nourishing whole grain that built America, in place of today's genetically modified crops processed by industrial agriculture into synthetic sweeteners and cheap meat.
A Tale of Two Worlds: New Crop and Old Crop Corn
2013-01-14 15:49:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
"moderation" in life is often the key...Corn bulls are excited about the tighter than expected "Dec 1 Stocks" number posted by the USDA on Friday. There was also some excitement about the better than expected corn "feed usage" numbers. All of which seem to be creating a "tale of two worlds." The "old crop" looking tighter and tighter, and the anticipation of a more burdensome "new crop." I suspect Grain Market Viewpoint read more
