Corn, Soybean Input Prices Should Hold Steady Overall

Source: Purdue University Extension Total variable input costs for the 2013 corn and soybean crops are likely to stay about the same as last year, says Alan Miller, a Purdue Extension farm business management specialist. Variable input costs are the costs of production that vary directly with the crop grown, but don't include fixed costs, such as cash rent. While some individual input prices are expected to increase, some will decrease and others will stay about the same. Fluctuations will serve to cancel out one another and to help keep overall variable costs fairly stable compared to last season. read more

No one has any accurate bets or lines on the weather this far out. Therefore if the USDA comes out with big acreage numbers for 2013 the bears will say, "I told you so." On the flip side if the USDA comes out with numbers below trade expectations the bears will say, "the USDA is playing it conservative, just like they did last year..." Source: Farmgate blog Last week a Missouri ethanol refinery, operated by POET, announced it was suspending production because of the inability to find enough corn. Others may have taken the same action, but the reason may not have been as pronounced. There is no surprise about spot shortages of corn following the drought of 2012, and more will be identified as the marketing year progresses. In fact, the low yields of central Illinois prevented sufficient supplies to larger ethanol plants, which have purchased trainloads of corn from higher-yield areas in Minnesota and the Dakotas. read more
