Decades ago, Milledge Avenue from Five Points to Broad Street was shaded by a broad arch of trees, planted specifically for that purpose at the beginning of the 20th century. In the intervening decades, that canopy has dwindled as trees succumbed variously to drought, disease, neglect - and, occasionally, to the axe or the chain saw - leaving behind fewer and fewer leafy survivors of that original planting.

LED developer Cree is planning a $1 million solar canopy for a site at its headquarters on Silicon Drive in Durham. The project, to be placed in a 610 parking-space lot, would take up just eight parking spaces for inverter equipment to support the system, according to a permit filed with the city of Durham.
