JOB DESCRIPTION ESAs Space Debris Office maintains a database containing information on the physical properties, orbital elements, results of dedicated analyses, etc., of manmade objects in outer space. This database, Database and Information System Characterising Objects in Space DISCOS, has been under continuous development and expansion since the early 90ies. It is deeply embedded in the operational activities from the Space Debris Office, e.g. the collision avoidance process for ESA satellites, and serves as a backbone for space debris studies undertaken within ESA or by industry and academia worldwide. The selected candidate shall provide onsite engineering support for tasks related to migrating DISCOS from its current implementation on an Oracle 10.2 database to a recent version of a PostgreSQL database. This migration is not limited to a content migration, but requires the migration of all related software interface for data ingestion and extraction, as well as an architectural redesign to circumvent known drawbacks of the current implementations. Responsibilities Duties Tasks The following activities shall be performed by the selected candidate Review of the current DISCOS database implementation and all related software programs and libraries for facilitating data ingestion and extraction from the database. Definition of a software architecture for a new relational database, based on PostgreSQL, maintaining all functionality of the current implementation of DISCOS, possibly including the use of a nonrelational database for the storage of files. Implementation of the new database architecture, and migration and updating of the data. Harmonisation and upgrade of all the database related software and interface libraries to use the newly developed database architecture. Test and validation of the newly developed database architecture and peripheral software. Qualifications Master degree in any related discipline Required knowledge The candidate shall have an MSc degree in software engineering and at least 3 years of experience applicable to the post. The candidate shall have a good expertise of the PCLinux, network services and protocols, and computer peripherals. The candidate shall have solid demonstrated experience with database administration The candidate shall be proficient in Linux, shell scripting languages, SQL, Python, and Perl. The candidate shall be proficient in relational databases. The experience of the candidate with PostgreSQL andor Oracle databases specifically is a considerable asset. The candidate shall have a profound demonstrated background in software engineering, the integration of software systems, and ESAs software engineering processes and related ECSS standards. The candidate shall be proficient in English. The candidate shall be professional, wellorganised, selfmotivated and be able to work autonomously. WHAT DO WE OFFER? Last published in 2010, guide was developed by NEMA 1IS SC10 Technical Subcommittee. Standard has been updated to reflect latest codes from the National Fire Protection Association.
