Redbox Instant, a streaming video service launched in March 2013 and jointly operated by the DVD rental kiosk firm's parent company Outerwall Inc. and Verizon Communications will be permanently shut down on Tuesday, the two companies announced in a statement Saturday. According to the announcement, Redbox Instant will cease operations at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time on October 7, and that information on applicable refunds would be emailed to customers and posted online on October 10. Users of the service will be able to continue to stream movies and use their Redbox kiosk credits until that time.

(Telecompaper) Redbox Instant, a streaming video service operated by Verizon Communications and Outerwall's Redbox, announced that it will will shut down on 7 October just before noon Pacific Time. The companies said the venture has not been as successful as hoped, Reuters reported. The service, which combined the Redbox DVD rental kiosk business with a streaming video offering from Verizon, never really took off. Subscribers will receive an email notifying them of the termination of the service. A separate email will be sent on 10 October 10 with details on refunds.

Lowell McAdam, the chief executive of Verizon Communications, recently signaled his company's acceptance of a la carte by announcing the launch of an Internet-based TV service that would offer greater programming flexibility than any other pay-TV provider.
