Environmentalists urged Pennsylvania officials to reject a proposal by FirstEnergy Corp. to ship coal ash from a Shippingport power plant to a site in the state's southwestern corner. The Environmental Integrity Project, Sierra Club and Earthjustice submitted a letter Tuesday that asked the Department of Environmental Protection to deny FirstEnergy's application to modify a permit for the closed Hatfield Ferry power plant landfill, the Beaver County Times reported .

Duke begins removing coal ash from dump near Charlotte

Duke Energy has begun what will be the years-long process of digging up coal ash from its unlined dumps and North Carolina and removing it to safer storage. The company said in a news release issued Thursday that the first tractor-trailer loaded with ash departed its retired Riverbend power plant near Charlotte, bound for a fully lined landfill in Homer, Georgia.
