Frank Holleman, senior attorney at the Southern Environmental Law Center, wrote to N.C. regulators in October arguing that their classification of Sutton Lake as a private cooling pond was mistaken. North Carolina environmental regulators tightened water quality rules requirements for Sutton Lake at Duke Energy's closed Sutton Plant, reclassifying the lake as public waters and designating the ash pond dams there as being high-risk.

Co. won't accept ash from Ebola victim apartment

A waste disposal facility in Calcasieu Parish says it has decided not to accept the ash resulting from the incineration of a Texas Ebola victim's belongings.Chemical Waste Management Inc. announced its decision Monday in a news release from Lake Charles. The company said the waste poses no threat to the environment or human health.

Duke Energy finds 830 private wells near its coal ash ponds

The Allen Steam Station in Gaston County has 410 private wells within a half mile of its coal ash ponds. N.C. officials say Duke Energy has identified 830 private and public drinking-water wells within a half-mile of its 32 coal ash ponds in North Carolina.
