10 companies' futures looking less bright

There are 10 stocks in the Standard & Poor's 500, including seed-company Monsanto , video streamer Netflix and automaker Ford , where Wall Street analysts have slashed fourth-quarter earnings estimates by 13% or more over the past 30 days, according to a USA TODAY analysis of data from S&P Capital IQ. Keeping a close eye on companies' futures is just as important during earnings season as assessing performance during the just-completed third quarter.

Futures Higher as Cautious Investors Await Earnings

U.S. stock futures rose modestly on Monday, after last week's big drop for stocks, which has strategists on the alert over important technical levels. Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 34 points to 16,471, while those for the S&P 500 index gained 5.6 points to 1,899.90.

U.S. stock-index futures declined, after equities fell the most since April, as concern that slower global growth will hurt the U.S. economy pushed the Standard & Poor's 500 Index towards its longest streak of weekly losses since January. Microchip Technology Inc. and Juniper Networks Inc. slumped in Germany after preliminary quarterly results missed the companies' own forecasts.

The USDA Hogs and Pigs Report, that almost everyone thought was bearish, resulted in only minor changes in analysts forecasts. It also had little negative impact on Lean Hogs futures as well. After small losses on Sept. 29, the trend has been higher across the board, with strength the greatest for the summer contracts. read more
