Scientific Community Support to Planck

2014-11-26 16:07:17| Space-careers.com Jobs RSS

This Work Package is to support specialised service to support the ESA PSO Planck Science Office during its post operational phase. Planck is the third MediumSized Mission M3 of ESAs Horizon 2000 Scientific Programme. It is designed to image the anisotropies of the Cosmic Background Radiation Field over the whole sky, with unprecedented sensitivity and angular resolution. Planck will provide a major source of information relevant to several cosmological and astrophysical issues, such as testing theories of the early universe and the origin of cosmic structure. The current main tasks of the Planck Science Office PSO are monitor proper implementation of the data reduction activities carried out at the DPCs. In particular verify that the level of coordination between the two DPCs is sufficient to guarantee an integrated final set of data products. define, in collaboration with the DPCs, the facilities required to support the postoperational phase. e.g. Planck archive management processing tools data distribution facilities. Planck archive access support and coordinate the interface with the Planck Community more than 400 active scientists and the Scientific Community at large. development and maintenance of adhoc tools to manage the interface to the scientific community. Tasks The support to the scientific community will include To support the management of the scientific projects that will be carried out during the proprietary phases To track the progress of scientific data analysis activities, and in particular of the flow and utilisation of internal data products To work together with the PSO Instrument Support Scientists to ensure that the data quality level of the data products is of high standard, well understood, and that the information necessary to use them is transferred to their users To be deeply involved, together with the DPCs, in the validation of scientific data products both internal and final To support systemlevel aspects, e.g. testing, of the scientific pipelines generating the scientific data products To support systemlevel configuration control aspects relevant for the scientific pipelines generating scientific products, e.g. control of interfaces, common definition documents and plans, configuration item lists, etc To support the creation and maintenance of PSO and ESA web pages and web tools targeted to the scientific community To provide general support to the scientific community as regards communications and Public Relations needs and materials To support the management of the publication policies To maintain and manage a publication data base To support, together with other PSO scientists, the development, and operation of the Planck Archives, e.g. by participating in their definition, testing, population, quality and utilisation To carry out data analysis activities, especially in payload and satellite systemlevel calibration areas Support the Project Scientist in his duties Support to another mission such as LISA Pathfinder might also be included. Specific qualification requirements Ph.D. or equivalent in astrophysics, physics or mathematics or related field, in the later cases with an astrophysical orientation. A strong scientific background in Planck related research with a good record of science publications in the astronomical refereed literature and with part of those signed by the candidate as first author. Experience interacting with instrument and calibration scientists and the scientific community around the world. Ability to operate in a small team environment and occasionally travel. Good interpersonal and communication skills in English are essential. Legal and Security Requirements All applicants must be legally allowed to work in Spain without the need to obtain a work visa. Non EU citizens cannot be employed by Aurora in Spain. Applicants are required to provide a copy of their passport and degree certificate.
