Chevron slashes 1,200 jobs in WA

Oil and gas giant Chevron has slashed more than 1,200 jobs at its massive Gorgon LNG project in Western Australia in the lead up to Christmas. Around 530 electrical workers on Gorgon were laid off last week, while another 700 positions, including those of boilermakers, pipe fitters, welders and trades assistants, were axed in the last two weeks, The Australian newspaper reported on Wednesday.
Fertiliser giant to move on WA

One of the world's biggest fertiliser producers and marketers is about to enter the WA market in a move with big ramifications for Wesfarmers-owned CSBP. Koch, which started operating on the east coast in 2010, is targeting a big share of the WA market which was worth an estimated $800 million last year.

Woolworths' hardware chain Masters gains some ground on Bunnings in WA

Woolworths' struggling hardware chain, Masters, is one of the biggest winners from a West Australian government decision to expand shopping hours in Perth. Masters has been less able to compete with rival Bunnings because of anomalies in the trading laws, which allow the Wesfarmers-owned chain to open earlier and snare lucrative trade traffic.

Burson to look over Metcash auto business as first WA stores open

Automotive parts supplier Burson Group says it will closely examine the Metcash automotive division as a potential acquisition because there's little overlap between the two firms, as it prepares to take the wraps off the first of its own Western Australian stores to fill a gap in its geographic network. Burson, which itself listed on the Australian Securities Exchange in April last year and has watched its share price climb by 74 per cent from its issue price of $1.82, is in expansion mode, and chief executive Darryl Abotomey said it would closely scrutinise the Metcash business.
