Seattle Genetics and Takeda's cancer drug meets main trial goal

Seattle Genetics Inc and Takeda Pharmaceutical Co Ltd said their approved cancer drug was successfully used as a consolidation therapy in a late-stage trial for patients with a type of lymphatic cancer. Patients who received the drug, Adcetris, immediately after a stem cell transplant, lived significantly longer without the disease progressing than those who were given a placebo, the companies said in a joint statement.

CytRx Corporation , a biopharmaceutical research and development company specializing in oncology, today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted multiple Orphan Drug Designations for the Company's lead drug candidate, aldoxorubicin, in three indications: glioblastoma multiforme , small cell lung cancer and ovarian cancer . Aldoxorubicin is CytRx's modified version of the widely-used chemotherapeutic agent, doxorubicin.

Merck drug extends immune system fight to stomach cancer

Merck & Co's drug Keytruda, the first in a new wave of immune-boosting medicines to be approved for treating melanomas in the United States, also has potential in stomach cancer, new research shows. Early clinical trial results reported on Sunday mean that gastric, or stomach cancer can be added to a growing list of tumor types where so-called immunotherapy may have an important role to play.

Gilead clears European hurdle for next-generation hepatitis C drug

The European Commission will weigh the positive recommendation by the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use, or CHMP, as it considers whether Harvoni - a combination of Gilead's Sovaldi and its experimental drug ledipasvir - can be sold in 28 European countries. The move comes as the Food and Drug Administration ways approval of the drug, which Foster City-based Gilead has hinted could cost under $100,000 .

Biosimilar drug developer Coherus jumps into IPO pool

The Redwood City company, which raised $55 million in May , is the latest Bay Area life sciences company in an increasingly deep and rich list of potential IPOs.
