With the threat of antimicrobial resistance on the rise, we are heartened by President Barack Obama's recent executive order that outlines a national strategy to combat drug resistance, including creation of an inter-agency task force to implement and monitor the plan. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that up to 2 million Americans suffer from antibiotic-resistant infections each year and that 23,000 of them die.

Ebola drug trials to be fast-tracked in West Africa

Experimental Ebola drugs including compounds from Mapp Biopharmaceutical, Sarepta and Tekmira will be tested in affected West African states for the first time in a bid to fast-track trials, the Wellcome Trust said on Tuesday. Announcing a 3.2 million pound grant for the work, the global health charity said the money would "enable multiple partners around the world to quickly establish clinical trials at existing Ebola treatment centers".

A state news agency says a Chinese court has fined British drug maker GlaxoSmithKline $492 million and sentenced its British former country manager and others to prison for bribing doctors and hospitals to use its products. The Xinhua News Agency said the former country manager, Mark Reilly, and others were sentenced to two to four years in the case, which highlighted widespread payments to Chinese doctors by sellers of drugs and medical equipment.
