EC approves Telenet takeover of Base
2016-02-04 12:11:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) The European Commission has approved the sale of Belgian mobile operator Base by KPN to Telenet, the Belgian cable operator controlled by Liberty Global. The clearance takes account of concessions offered by Telenet to ensure competition from MVNOs on the Belgian market. Base is Belgium's smallest mobile operator, but served as a challenger on the market with its relatively low-price offers. Telenet is already the country's largest MVNO. "Without effective commitments, a merger of these two dynamic players would have significantly reduced competition, with a risk of higher prices and less choice and innovation for Belgian mobile consumers," the EC said. To allay these concerns, Base agreed to transfer two of the country's largest MVNOs, Mobile Vikings and Jim Mobile, to the company Medialaan, which will use this to develop into a full MVNO and stronger competitor on the mobile market. Liberty Global also agreed preferred conditions for Medialaan to continue using Base's network.

(Telecompaper) Virtual operators accounted for over a fifth (22%) of Belgian mobile customers at the end of Q3 2015, according to the latest edition Telecompaper's Belgian Mobile Virtual Operators Market report. The number of customers at MVNOs, including operator second brands and branded resellers, reached 2.94 million, an increase of around 1 percent from a year earlier. The growth was largely due to the two largest VOs, Telenet and Lycamobile.

Telenet, Proximus remain dominant on Belgian fixed market
2015-10-09 15:45:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) The Belgian consumer market for fixed services generated revenues of EUR 678 million in the second quarter, with Telenet remaining the largest supplier in terms of both revenues and number of broadband connections, according to Telecompaper's quarterly report about the Belgian fixed consumer market, which came out in September. Telenet reported revenues for fixed services (TV, telephony, internet) in Q2 of EUR 290 million. Proximus (the former incumbent Belgacom) came next with EUR 277 million. Telenet also remains the largest in terms of broadband connections with 1.47 million units. Proximus also comes in second place with nearly 1.34 million connections. The smaller cable operators Voo and Numericable lag behind. Together, they make up 12 percent of the fixed consumer market. Proximus gets about 40 percent of its revenues on the consumer market from fixed broadband and is therefore less dependent than Telenet on the delivery of internet access. Both market leaders have since mid-2013 grown their revenues from broadband to consumers, going to EUR 247 million from 210 million in Q2 2013.

Telenet buys Base for EUR 1.325 billion
2015-04-20 08:33:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Belgian cable operator Telenet has agreed to acquire the mobile operator Base from KPN for EUR 1.325 billion. The sale price is equal to 8.9 times Base's EBITDA last year. Telenet is already a successful MVNO in Belgium and with Base acquires its own mobile network infrastructure and the number-three spot on the Belgian mobile market. Base has around 3.3 million customers, good for 21 percent of the market at the end of 2014. Telenet said it will raise around EUR 1 billion in debt to help finance the takeover as well as invest EUR 240 million in Base in the coming years. The company expects to realise around EUR 150 million in annual synergies from the takeover, thanks to savings on operational costs and investments and migrating its mobile customers to the Base network. For KPN, the sale marks the end of its international activities and the company will now focus exclusively on its home market the Netherlands.
