Softbank Group sells US mobile distributor Brightstar

(Telecompaper) Japan's Softbank Group said it has agreed to fully sell US mobile services unit Brightstar for an undisclosed amount to Brightstar Capital Partners (BCP), a private equity firm formed in 2015 by a former executive at Brightstar. Under the terms of the deal, Softbank will get cash and a 25 percent share in BCP. The transaction, subject to the usual approvals and closing conditions, should close by end March.

Telefonica, Rakuten Mobile ink OpenRAN MoU

(Telecompaper) Spain's Telefonica has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japanese operator Rakuten Mobile to cooperate on the development of OpenRAN, 5G Core and OSS technologies. The partners said they intend to run joint lab tests and trials of OpenRAN architecture, focusing on the role of Artificial Intelligence in RAN networks. They will also jointly develop proposals for optimal 5G RAN architecture and OpenRAN models as part of industry efforts to achieve quicker time to market, new price-points and boost the potential of software-centric RAN.

Dutch mobile revenues show bigger drop in Q2 as Covid-19 effects hit B2B market

(Telecompaper) The decline in mobile service revenues on the Dutch market accelerated in the second quarter to a 4.5 percent year-on-year fall to EUR 886 million, according to the latest research by Telecompaper. Less travel and more working at home due to the coronavirus meant lower roaming and out-of-bundle revenues and also slower customer growth. The continued pressure on especially the business market due to the pandemic effects has led Telecompaper to downgrade its forecast for full-year revenues in the latest edition of the Dutch Mobile Operators quarterly report.
